     Distinguished alumnus Awtar Singh visits PEC

Chandigarh, February 1st 2009

Dr. Avtar Singh (BE-Civil, 1949) a distinguished Alumnus and a mentor of Civil Engineering students of PEC visited institute on 28th of January, 2009. He is a renowned consultant and expert witness in the field of geotechnical forensic engineering and has been promoting higher education for PEC Alumni and other people of Indian origin for several years through Avtar-Teji Singh Fellowship Fund in Civil Engineering. The purpose of the Avtar-Teji Singh Fellowship Fund in Civil Engineering is to support graduate students studying in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. The fund seeks to enable a qualified student from Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh to pursue graduate-level studies at Berkeley each year. It is the intent of the Avtar-Teji Singh Fellowship fund in Civil Engineering to cover, at a minimum, tuition and fees for the selected Fellow.

During his visit to PEC, he visited the Department of Civil Engineering and interacted with the faculty members. The entire visit was well coordinated by Dr. Siby John, Prof. & Head, Department of Civil Engineering. During his interaction with faculty he emphasized that infrastructure development would be the key engineering activity throughout the world despite economic recession. Therefore the relevance of Civil Engineering in coming years would be multifold. Later, he interacted with the chairman BOG and Director, PEC, along with Dr. Gurnam Singh, Professor Incharge, Alumni Affairs and discussed issues to revitalize the alumni-PEC relationship. In his interaction with the students he explained the entire procedure for getting into the University of California, Berkeley. He appreciated the commendable performance made by the PEC students at UC Berkeley. Eleven students have so far received the Avtar-Teji Singh fellowship and have graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a Masterís degree in Civil Engineering. He was delighted to notice the good number of gathering and enthusiastic aspirants for the Avtar-Teji fellowship.
